NEWS FLASH... on 28th April Net-A-Porter, the hub of online fashion, are launching their exciting brand new denim boutique. Hot denim labels such as Superfine, J Brand, Ksubi and DRKSHDW by Rick Owens (Red Lippy loves loves loves the ‘wraped robot jacket’) will be sold on the site alongside the Net-A-Porter fashion team’s tips on the latest styles, trends and designers of all things denim. The campaign image above is from the promotion of the site and you can bet that from the way Net-A-Porter do things the site will be incredibly chic.
If there is one season to do a denim boutique then this season is it as love it or hate it the double denim trend is back with a vengeance. Although it is this season’s trickiest trend to pull off, it is a sure fire way to put you straight to the top of the style stakes (or completely off the radar if you get it horribly wrong).
I must admit that my initial reaction to seeing it paraded down the Spring / Summer ‘10 catwalks was “Oh hell no!” but I knew deep down that give it a little while and I would be donning my denim shirt and jeans together. My first experience was a weird one - I wasn’t initially convinced when I put the look together. I felt a tad silly and somewhat old-fashioned looking but I wanted to test the water (outside my bedroom) to see people’s reactions. Work (bare in mind I work in fashion) thought I was the bees knees and soon were all giving the trend a go (even my boss) however people on the street weren’t entirely convinced and the up-and-down stares were a plenty. However it has to be one of the comfiest fashion trends of late (well if you compare it to leather leggings and sky-high platforms) but I suppose it is like marmite and not everyone is going to love it.
Certain rules have to be abided to however to prevent you looking dowdy and totally wrong:
- Denim colours MUST be contrasted (i.e darker jeans and lighter denim shirt).
- The look must be teamed with something feminine like high heels or a colourful cross-body bag so the look has a hint of sex appeal (men tend not to be huge fans of this look as you can imagine).
- Jewellery is a must - slap on some bangles and a cocktail ring to prevent the American old-man ranch look (it’s not a good one trust me!)
- Add different elements like patchwork or frayed denim to mix up the look.
- Lastly, wear with attitude... If you have no confidence in your outfit then no-one else will!
